Artist in Residence - Muriel Schmalberg Ullman

On exhibit May 10, 2018 through July 30, 2018

Muriel Schmalberg Ullman

My summer watercolors are painted on location in Southwest France where we have a small converted barn on several acres, a short walk to the village.

Weekly pop up markets with fresh picked produce, bright umbrellas, is where I want to be, so I set up my easel and paint to the sounds and smells of each market. As summer moves on, vegetables, fruits, flowers change. Days are shorter, new colors and mood, different light, cooler air. After painting the market, coffee and pastry are a must at the local cafe.

In the village is a walled medieval garden. I often set up my easel by the well, under an arbor of leaves. The image on this invitation, View from the Medieval Garden, was done from this spot.

Just outside the house, my subject is always there. Flowers grow against the stone wall, cafe table and chairs ready for the next meal bathed in sun, surrounded by trees. The barn across the road is full of charm, gorgeous in all lights, dramatic shadows, and a perfect place for an easel in shade, protected from possible rain.

Last summer it rained for three weeks but I managed to paint every day between downpours or from cafe windows.

I paint watercolors intuitively, directly with a fat brush, loose and free.

Acrylic paintings are done in my Sausalito studio in winter. I paint from summer watercolors, photos of favorite places, still life subjects.
