Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
Intensity, muscle and concentration define our Reserve vineyard-designated wine from Napa Valley's grand cru site, To Kalon. A complex blend of fresh blackberry, wild berry compote, cassis, dark cocoa powder, forest floor, all-spice, and sweet vanilla, with balancing acidity, make this a perfect Anniversary wine. 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petite Verdot
Vineyard Notes
This is the third vintage of our To Kalon Vineyard-designated Reserve. When Robert Mondavi chose the To Kalon Vineyard in west Oakville as the home for his new winery in 1966 he remarked that, "It was a vineyard with a distinguished history and a magical nature. Ideal soils, sunlight, and rain—to my eye, the vineyard was a treasure." Those sentiments were re-confirmed when the To Kalon Vineyard was named the Vineyard of the Year by the California State Farm Bureau in 2011. Our Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is blended from the finest blocks within To Kalon. Another record harvest, 2013 saw consistently beautiful weather leading to optimal ripeness in what is being called an 'epic' year. There was almost no rainfall from January through March, bringing an earlier than usual budbreak. April provided a few small rainstorms to quench the vines, and warm weather followed. With just one heat spike in late June and early July, the growing season provided weather for optimal flavor development in the grapes resulting in an early and healthy harvest. Our Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon grapes for this wine were harvested between September 11th and October 5th.
Winemaker Notes
The grapes were hand-harvested with three stages of strict sorting: first, on the vine, then by individual clusters, and then again by single berry following de-stemming. The selected grapes went directly into traditional French oak tanks for cold soak, fermentation and extended maceration – a total of 34 days of wine to skin contact – maximizing the extraction of varietal character and complexity while keeping the tannins round and supple. The new wine was drained and gently pressed into 100% new French-oak barrels for malolactic fermentation, assuring seamless integration of fruit and oak. The final blend was assembled through repeated tasting trials over twenty-one months of barrel aging. The wine was bottled in August of 2015.

Robert Mondavi Winery: Focusing on the Greatest Vintage I've Tasted in 37 Years Visiting Northern California: 2013 – The Game Changer
A beautifully polished wine, with a dense ruby/purple color, it is still tightly knit and showing high-quality oak. The wine is full-bodied and rich, with outstanding depth, ripeness, and purity. There is plenty of backbone and tannin for 25−30 years of cellaring. The wine shows notes of chocolate and plenty of blackcurrant fruit and blackberry. This is a beauty and certainly a great reserve and worthy homage to the legendary Robert Mondavi.

Aromas of black currants, violets, lavender, and stone follow through a full body, chewy tannins and toned muscular structure. This is a Mondavi reserve that harkens back to the great years of the 1970s. A tribute to the 50th anniversary of the winery. Try in 2022.

Full bodied and robust, it's intense in bark, tar and black licorice, with dottings of coconut. Aromatically inviting, it's dusty and soft, with acres of complexity and structure.

A defining element of the greatness of Napa Valley's 2013 vintage is apparent in the wines that were not pushed and hyperextracted: They show their provenance with clarity. This wine does not lack for extract, but carries it with the effortless grace of a classic Oakville cabernet. Geneviève Janssens selected the fruit for this Reserve from her favored bloacks at To Kalon, Mondavi's estate vineyard behind the winery in the western benchlands of Oakville; this vintage comes from blocks replanted between 1996 and 2000. The black plum fruit is almost tarry in its warm, smoky tannins, but there's a red core that emerges,a pungent center that darkens and deepens at the edges. Decant it if you open this now, to serve with dry-aged beef.

To Kalon Vineyard, one of Napa Valley's finest and most respected first growth vineyards, is where this 50th Anniversary Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon was born. The 2013 vintage, one of the finest in recent times, pays tribute to the legendary Napa Valley winemaking pioneer, Robert Mondavi, who was instrumental in earning Napa Valley a seat at the table of the finest wines in the world. The Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon grapes were sourced from the finest blocks throughout To Kalon Vineyards, with individual bunches selected at perfect ripeness, then hand harvested, after which they were hand sorted, then only the finest individual berries chosen after de-stemming. Nothing but the finest fruit made its way into this iconic wine, and the finished product tells that story with impressive flavour, texture, and harmony. A blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon with 8% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petite Verdot, this wine is muscular, rich, and concentrated with huge structure and loads of dark fruits and sweet spice. Very youthful at the moment, its beautiful balance, elegance, and harmony will be preserved over the next 30+ years while it evolves in bottle. Enjoy with fine cuts of grilled beef, such as Rib Eye with Bordelaise sauce. Tasted May 2017 at Robert Mondavi Winery in Oakville, Napa Valley. 96 points. Matt Steeves - www.quercusvino.ca
