Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
This Fumé Blanc captures the distinctive personality of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon grapes grown in Napa Valley’s Oakville region. Enticing citrus, melon and quince notes intertwine with hints of orange blossom, lemongrass and cinnamon in the aromas and crisp, balanced flavors. Although the wine is dry, there is an impression of sweet fruit on the silky palate and lingering finish.

Top 100 Must Have Wines for 2013

"This isn't Mondavi's most expensive Fumé (Sauvignon) Blanc. But it is one of their best ever. In fact, it's so classic, you could use it in a winemaking class to teach future vintners about how great Napa Sauvignon Blanc should taste. It's bone dry, brilliantly crisp with acidity and gently touched by oak. The main notes are of lees, which give a sourdough tang, and layers of lemons, limes, pink grapefruits, gooseberries and rich tropical fruits. An unbelievable value at this price, but only 1,975 cases were produced." - S.H.

Vineyard Notes
While the notably cool 2011 vintage presented challenges for a number of grape varieties, it produced wonderful Sauvignon Blanc. Unfortunately, the crop was very small due to unwelcome rain during flowering. The grapes matured slowly through the cool, foggy summer, providing layers of ripe, delicious flavors with balanced acidity. The onset to harvest was one of the latest on record – we picked the Sauvignon Blanc for this wine from September 6-9.
Production Notes
91% Sauvignon Blanc, 9% Sémillon
Winemaker Notes
We hand-harvested the Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon in the cool, early morning and then gently pressed the whole clusters, minimizing skin contact, to retain freshness and vibrancy in the wine. For richness and complexity, we barrel-fermented 90% of the wine in 60-gallon French oak barrels. The balance was cool-fermented in stainless steel tanks to capture the lively fruit flavors. All of the wine was barrel aged sûr lie (on the yeast) for nine months, with hand stirring to integrate flavors and develop its creamy texture. A portion of new barrels (12%) contributed subtle oak spices to the fruit character.
