Geneviève Janssens, Director of Winemaking for Robert Mondavi Winery in the Napa Valley, has received one of the industry’s highest honors, being named Wine Enthusiast’s 2010 Winemaker of the Year. These awards recognize excellence in the wine industry, honoring the most notable figures, with a special emphasis on achievements made over the past year. Her award was announced in October 2010.
Geneviève and her team consistently make world-class Napa Valley wines that are recognized globally for their exceptional quality. Drawn to Mr. Mondavi’s vision for the Napa Valley, she left her native France and joined the winery in 1978.
A member of the winemaking team for more than 30 years, Richard Arnold has made significant contributions toward both winemaking and research at Robert Mondavi Winery. As Associate Winemaker for Robert Mondavi Winery, Richard heads the production of Chardonnay and Fumé Blanc.
Nova Cadamatre, who joined the team in 2013, is one of three winemakers for Robert Mondavi Winery, assisting largely with the production of red wines, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, and Merlot. One of the first graduates of Cornell’s Viticulture and Enology program in 2006, Nova relocated to California to assume a number of winemaking roles, including the launch of key sparkling wine programs.
TO KALON CELLAR RENOVATION
Never resting on our laurels, in 2001, Genevieve Janssens and Mr. Mondavi unveiled the To Kalon Cellar. Requiring five years to design and build, the state-of-the-art cellar represents a complete reimagining of the vinification of red wine fruit from our estate vineyard. Our 5,000-gallon Taransaud oak fermenters were assembled in the cellar and are the backbone of our red winemaking program. To Genevieve, “carefully selected oak is the Stradavarius of the winemaker”. The winery is now entirely gravity flow, gently allowing our femented wines to age in the first-year barrel room where we choose from among 10 different coopers to achieve the complexity and balance that we strive for.
