ACADEMY OF WINE: Spring In The Vineyards
By Peter Alig, Wine Education

As I write this, rain falls on the beautiful Napa Valley. Finally.

2013 was a dry year, excessively so, yet the vines responded with wines of great concentration and finesse. We cannot wait to share them with you. This needed rain falls on vines in our To Kalon Vineyard that have recently been pruned, a late-winter event that prepares the vines for the new growing season. Pruning is the act of removing the canes that nurtured the previous year’s precious fruit. The canes of 2013 are not completely removed; they contain the building blocks of 2014’s canes. These canes then sprout from buds attached to the remaining thumb-length sections of 2013’s canes.

As spring takes hold, these buds slowly push out, officially marking the beginning of the new vintage. These new canes are extremely fragile in the early stages of their growth. Hard frosts in March and in April can devastate these new canes, resulting in lower grape yields for the year. The threat of frost necessitated the installation of wind machines in vineyards, which move the heavier, colder, frost-causing air away from the vines.

If all goes well during “bud break,” the vines will flower, at which time self-pollination occurs. Bees are not required. From these centers of pollination emerge the grape clusters, a period known as “fruit set.” As the vines move from pollination to fruit set, winemakers get their first glimpse of how large a crop they can expect. 2014 may prove to be a smaller vintage than 2013, but the quality will be as good, if not better.
